ATLANTIC COUNTY RECEIVES NOTIFICATION
OF EMERGENCY FOOD AND SHELTER FUNDING

The Federal Emergency Management Agency awarded Atlantic County $170,057 in funds under the Emergency Food and Shelter National Board Program to supplement emergency food and shelter programs in the county. The local distribution board, led by United Way of Atlantic County, is currently accepting proposals for funding from qualifying organizations.

The decision to award funds to Atlantic County was made by a national board chaired by FEMA and composed of representatives from The Salvation Army, American Red Cross, Council of Jewish Federations, Catholic Charities USA, National Council of Churches of Christ in the U.S.A., and United Way of America. The Board was charged with distributing funds appropriated by Congress to help expand the capacity of food and shelter programs in high-need areas around the country.

United Way of Atlantic County provides the administrative staff, functions as local fiscal agent, and leads the local distribution board, composed of local representatives from the organizations on the national board, as well as other area health and human service organizations. This local board will determine the distribution of the Atlantic County funds among area agencies that provide emergency food and shelter.

Under the terms of the grant from the national board, local organizations chosen to receive funds must: 1) be a private, voluntary nonprofit or unit of government, 2) have an accounting system, 3) practice non-discrimination, 4) have demonstrated the capability to deliver emergency food and/or shelter programs, and 5) if they are a private, voluntary organization, they must have a voluntary board. Qualifying organizations are urged to apply.

Proposals for funding must be received by United Way of Atlantic County, 4 E. Jimmie Leeds Road, Suite 10, Galloway, NJ, 08205, no later than 12:00 noon on Tuesday, January 25, 2005. For additional information, please call Fran Wise at United Way at 404-4483 ext. 23.
