Volunteers Make Real Community Impact
During United Way’s Day of Caring

April 23, 2004 – In recognition of National Volunteer Week, nearly 30 volunteers participated in community service projects across Atlantic County as part of United Way’s Day of Caring on April 23. United Way's Volunteer Center of Atlantic County organized the Day of Caring, sponsored by AtlantiCare, in hopes of making it an annual event.

“Volunteers are a critical resource for our community,” said John Emge, Executive Director of United Way of Atlantic County. “United Way is a volunteer-driven organization, but it is events like Day of Caring that truly engage the community to learn more about how United Way contribution dollars are used.”

Several area businesses and organizations provided employees with a paid day to volunteer as a group, as well as the opportunity to give back to the community, network with colleagues in a non-office setting and practice new forms of teamwork.

Eagle Academy staff and students joined United Way and Seaview Marriott Resort & Spa staff in painting at the Community Food Bank. Employees at Resorts Atlantic City helped the Literacy Volunteers with landscaping and painting projects. Sun National Bank employees, assisted by United Way staff members and a representative from T-Byrds Computers, cleaned up the attic and grounds at Mizpah Inland Human Services. Employees at the Mays Landing Target store painted at the Atlantic County Women’s Center. A group of individual volunteers helped the Court Appointed Special Advocates with a bulk mailing. United Way volunteers spruced up the landscape and garden at the ARC of Atlantic County.

Resorts Atlantic City employees Joe Vozzi, Franny Iannello and Kevin Brown landscaped and painted at Literacy Volunteers

Before jumping to work, volunteers first gathered at the Community Food Bank for a Welcome Breakfast at 8:30 a.m. and were treated to a breakfast including quiche prepared by students from Eagle Academy and donuts and coffee donated by Krispy Kreme.

In addition to thanking AtlantiCare for sponsoring the 2004 Day of Caring, United Way’s Volunteer Center of Atlantic County thanks the following businesses for donating refreshments and supplies: Big Lots, Party Poopers, Pepsi Bottling Company, Sherwin Williams, Soltz Paint, and Walmart.
