The awards celebration
closed the books on United Way’s 2003 fundraising campaign.
General Campaign Chair Lloyd D. Levenson, senior partner at
Cooper Levenson Attorneys At Law, announced the campaign total
of more than $3.2 million.
“Many individuals and companies
responded generously to United Way’s 2003 campaign,”
Levenson said. “Twenty businesses contributed to United
Way of Atlantic County for the first time this year, either
by making a corporate gift or by running an employee campaign.
More than 50 businesses and organizations increased their corporate
or employee gift by at least 10 percent.”
Nearly 300 individuals gave at the leadership level with a minimum
personal gift of $1,000 to qualify for the Richard Somers Society.
“In this new millennium, United
Way of Atlantic County has consistently raised more than $3
million to support the programs provided by our partner agencies—a
benchmark this community consistently struggled to achieve even
during the boom of the 1990s,” said John Emge, United
Way of Atlantic County Executive Director.
United Way presented more than 250 awards
to area businesses, employers and labor unions for their outstanding
support of United Way through workplace campaigns.
AtlantiCare won the most prestigious
United Way campaign award, the Captain’s Cup, which is
presented to an organization with outstanding dedication to
United Way and the community. Support to the annual campaign
from AtlantiCare and its employees totaled $206,000 in 2003.
This achievement places their United Way campaign first among
all New Jersey hospitals and health systems, and third in the
greater Philadelphia region.
The Captain’s Cup was presented
to AtlantiCare also for their support of numerous community
activities and fundraisers, such as the RNS Mothers Day Walk,
the American Heart Association’s Heart Walk, nursing scholarships
through the NAACP, support to the Atlantic County Hispanic Alliance,
and the “Heart Heroes” campaign for heart defibrillators.
The H.E.R.E. Local 54 employees at the
Atlantic City Hilton won the Local 54/United Way Community Partnership
Award. The award recognizes the Local 54 employees at the casino
property with the highest participation among Local 54 members
in the United Way campaign. Forty-eight percent of Local 54
members at the Hilton participated in the campaign this year.
Overall, Local 54 members throughout Atlantic County participating
in this year’s United Way campaign contributed more than
$376,000 to the community.
“We are truly grateful for the
support of our volunteers and the many local businesses and
individuals who come together to help fund the 65 valuable programs
provided by our 34 partner agencies,” said Charles Biscieglia,
in-coming President, United Way of Atlantic County Board of
Directors. “Our goal going forward must be to continue
to broaden the base of support for our local United Way.”
