Atlantic City—United Way of Atlantic County recognized Susan Zavaglia Werner, Director of Development & Marketing for Gilda’s Club South Jersey, with the George F. Lynn Volunteer of the Year Award at its 68th Annual Meeting and Awards Celebration, March 23 at Trump Plaza Hotel & Casino.
This award is given annually to the United Way volunteer who shows an extraordinary commitment to the organization and general well-being of the community. The award was renamed in 1995 for George Lynn, whose passion for volunteerism and understanding of its importance in our communities set a standard for volunteer service.

Zavaglia Werner started her experience with United Way of Atlantic County by serving as an allocations volunteer, helping the organization determine the funding levels for its partner agencies. In 1997 she became a Board member and stepped into the leadership ranks by serving as an ad-hoc member of the Executive Committee.

As Board President from 2002 to 2004, Werner led the organization’s transformation into a Community Impact-focused United Way. Through the years, she served on a number of committees, including the Campaign Cabinet and the Resource Development, Leadership Giving and Executive Search committees.
In nominating Zavaglia Werner, one of her peers on the Board said, “Sue’s involvement and dedication are strong because she truly wants to help those in need and sees United Way as a way of doing that.”
Zavaglia Werner has remained active in the organization and continues to be involved with the agency’s initiatives and events. She presently serves on the Leadership Development Committee.
