“POWER OF THE PURSE” LUNCHEON TO HIGHLIGHT WOMEN, WEALTH & PHILANTHROPY, APRIL 23

Margate Business Owner Cookie Till will serve as the 2010 “Power of the Purse” Honoree

Galloway, N.J. - To some, it is a symbol of status; to others, a space for personal effects. But when, is a purse not just a handbag?

Simply put, it is when women become more involved in philanthropic issues within their communities and even throughout the world. Many women would like to see themselves as philanthropists but need answers to questions about their own financial security and their giving potential.

On Friday, April, 23, United Way of Atlantic County’s Women’s Leadership Initiative will host the first annual “Power of the Purse” luncheon, focused on communicating the impact of women’s philanthropy within their own community. Attendees will learn about the extraordinary service of women philanthropists and changemakers right here in our community. The event will feature a panel discussion and will honor Margate business owner Cookie Till for her leadership within the local community. The workshop will be held from 10:00am-1:30pm at Steve and Cookie’s By The Bay, located in Margate, N.J. Tickets are $40 per person.

A hugely successful restaurateur and tireless community supporter, Ms. Cookie Till will serve as the first “Power of the Purse” honoree. During the luncheon, she will share her unique endeavors in community service and reveal what drives this passion for making a difference. Till owns the bayfront dining masterpiece, Steve & Cookie’s by the Bay, which she started with her late husband Steve more than 10 years ago. In that time, she has become an outspoken advocate for our community and has begun several community initiatives aimed at promoting healthy eating, including Thursday's Margate Farmer's Market and the “Children’s Garden” at the Tighe School in Margate.

A panel discussion on Women, Wealth & Philanthropy will include the following topics:

• “Ways To Give,” presented by Mary Crawford, financial advisor for Merrill Lynch
• “How Much Can I Give, Your Money and Your Life,” discussion by Barbara Lang, CPA, Lang & Associates
• “Trends in Women’s Giving - Why Give and How to Choose,” presented by Barbara M. Washington, CAP®, Vice President, Senior Philanthropic Consultant, Bank of America Merrill Lynch

“Now is the time for our community’s women leaders to invest their philanthropic resources and help us create long-lasting changes that prevent problems from happening in the first place,” stated Helen Walsh, chair of the Women’s Leadership Initiative. “We invite all women leaders and philanthropists to be a part of the change and join us on April 23. Together we can inspire hope and create opportunities for a better tomorrow.”

Tickets can be purchased online through www.unitedwayac.org For more information on the Women’s Leadership Initiative, contact Meredith Egan, Director of Community Initiatives at 609-404-4483 ext. 19 or MEgan@unitedwayac.org
