In 1937 a group of concerned citizens in Atlantic County assembled together with one mission in mind, to help their community. Shortly after, the Community Chest of Absecon Island was officially formed with election of a Board of Trustees and a new President, Mr. Paul O'Neill. Their idea was to pull all community resources together and a first effort at community fundraising drew a considerable $66,670, distributed among ten local agencies. A Mr. A.C. Poffenberger chaired the first campaign. Fast forward to 2012 and United Way of Atlantic County, under the leadership of Board President Brian K. Jackson, is now supporting some 60 programs through 40 partners agencies. Through the generosity of thousands of local donors, the Campaign has surpassed a million dollars under the supervision of Campaign General Chairman Rick Dovey, President of ACUA. But with all the incredible changes that have taken place in 75 years, the mission remains the same - to be a source of help for those in need in the local community.

“This celebration is about the leaders, volunteers and donors whose vision has propelled the organization forward 75 years,” said John Emge, Executive Director of Untied Way of Atlantic County. “Without these individuals and their service, generosity and concern for the whole community, United Way is just an idea. It is the donors and volunteers that make us whole and active and really able to help.” United Way will also pay tribute to noted radio personality and local columnist Pinky Kravitz. A longtime advocate for community advancement, Pinky Kravitz has been awarded the first-ever Lifetime Achievement Award by the New Jersey Broadcasters Association and has been called ‘the most significant radio personality in the history of New `Jersey - more Mr. Atlantic City than Mr. Peanut ever was’ . He’s collaborated on a variety of city projects - the Boardwalk Committee, Atlantic City-Puerto Rico Reciprocal Visitation Program, and most recently the Boardwalk Empire facade and the Atlantic City Salutes America’s Armed Forces Parade for which he chairs the planning committee.
